As a learner of the historical medievel sword techniques, I think it's funny to note that, as such, our stances isn't directly aggresive or defensive, it's more a basis for a series of moves which is possible from that position you inevidently will end up in, be that slashing/stabbing, parrying or deflecting. Thereby saying that a sword wielder should be just as aggresive in either position he stands in or moves into and deal the same amount of damage within the same amount of time. What I hoped for, was a ditching of the old belief of defensive/offensive stances, a sword hurts and that's basicly that. Some positions are just easier on the arms, if you want to stand locked in a stance for a longer period of time, if you're f.ex. Fighting multiple opponents and want to utilize the inevitable opening a striking opponent has, from every stance the hit/stab comes from. But this can be done from any position you are in, your way of responding is just different from the other positions. To give this game credit, the short films I've seen of the fighting reflects this the best, of all the games out on the market atm. And I do understand that my rant here is pointles, since a revision of this is a massive a project. Just something I've been logging around inside my warm and fuzzy inner self for a long time.

To all them people who now will respond saying that I got it wrong and that the more you can move your arms in the slash (ie. the aggresive stance), the harder it hits I will say: Yes, but a flick of the wrist can acomplish the same amount of damage (humans are frightfully fragile)and the over-active moving of arms is not really wise, since you will be leaving yourself without a sword between yourself and the opponents sword and a foot of steel in the stomach stops most people from striking... Ever... again...

Gotta say I would prefer your idea of the stances dictating what style of attacks you could do -- but afaik the idea of stances in AoC are similar to WoW -- you'll soak up more damage in defensive and deal less as a result, and in frenzy you'll deal more damage but take more damage. I don't think there are 'defensive only' or 'frenzy only' moves though, which gave some variety to stances and tanking in WoW. Torn 08:27, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
