Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures is an Online Action RPG scheduled for Windows in 2006. A mix of a deep, story-driven single-player experience and a massive and brutal multiplayer end-game brings forth the ultimate representation of the Age of Conan. Now you can enter the brutal domain of the world’s greatest fantasy hero

In Conan the players will encounter a dark, lush, violent and sinful universe, presented in fantastic graphics and stunning 7.1 surround audio. In a world filled with cruel gods, mythical creatures, lost civilizations and a struggling human race, the mighty barbarian has finally seized the throne as king of Aquilonia. But Conan’s rule is on the brink of chaos, spiraling towards the doom of ancient evils.

In this twisted fantasy world, dark magic and brutal combat lurks around every corner, and each man and woman must carve their own unique destiny under Conan’s reign. In the true vision of Robert E. Howard’s dark universe it’s now time for you to become a messenger of death.

  • Explore Hyboria, the legendary world of Conan, presented in incredible graphics and sound.
  • Emerge as a hero from a story-driven single-player experience and embark into even greater adventures in the multiplayer part of the game. The branching single-player story is created by the award-winning writers behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Anarchy Online so expect a rare treat.
  • Experience Funcom’s revolutionary “Real Combat” engine. A new multi-point melee system allows the players to swing their weapons where they direct it, in real-time, going head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat.
  • Create player-made battle formations, and command both NPC’s and other players in epic multiplayer battles.
  • Form guilds in the multiplayer game and lay siege to hostile castles. Let the catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is brutally crushed to a pulp.

Age of Conan has a plethora of additional features, as is expected from a Funcom online game. A presentation of the game, including more information about its features, will be held at E3 in May.

[edit] Artificial Intelligence

AoC has a unique AI system which allows NPCs to "think". Event they can have their own moods. They can be hungy, lonely or angry. So there'll not be npcs walking in a waypoint and doing nothing unless they are being attacked. Even a pack of mobs will not be acting same, every single one will have its own AI script which causes unique actions like fighting eachother or warning you not to come closer.

They will be acting as they do in real life. For example, a single wolf might not attack you but a pack might. Their actions will even be changing in different hours of a day.

[edit] Auctions

There seems to be some plans on auction houses. Not clear.

[edit] Player Housing

In Conan we have special, massive, regions coined (but they have distinct names - "Laceish Planes", "Murrogh Forest" etc.) "Resource & Building Regions". They contain 5-8 village locations. These village locations can be occupied by guilds, putting up their walls, towers, keeps and production facilities (to make swords or what have you.). That is, they can put these up unless monsters have settled there first. Picts, bandits or other darker creatures will sometimes call their mates and create their own village when they stumble upon these locations.

As a matter of fact, most of these locations will be occupied within a relative short matter of time. The struggle for resources in the Hyborian world is fierce, and there are no free lunches. Your guild will have to destroy the upstarts, and oust them from their straggling village. Then you can settle. The method of kicking monsters out is to use formations, individual battle and siege engines.

Be that as it may. The monsters can be thrown out of all the places they "hive" except one - the mother hive so to say. Here you will have to "chastise" them, or they will attack your village, burning it to the ground - if not protected. Most likely these sieges will be the places where the formations will "come into their own". (from IGN.com)

There will be massive battles of various types. You can cooperate with other players to build fortresses, keeps and whole villages. These can be used to stage battles against monster tribes doing the same in the massive, so called "resource and building" areas. Bring a bunch of your friends, some catapults, two or three different formations and raze the Pict villages to the ground (Picts are a wild and violent people from many different tribes, and always the enemy of civilized man). If you don't repel the Pict vermin, they will, with an RTS-like AI (like first seen in Dune and Command & Conquer), grow their villages to a critical mass, sending a flood of destruction to your village.

[edit] Servers

AoC servers will be able to handle 1500-2500 players online. And as the game client can handle hundreds of players on screen. There will be North American, European and Asian servers.

[edit] Instancing

As Funcom is the first company used the instancing technology, there will be instances in AOC.

[edit] Inventory

There will be limited inventory slots in game.

[edit] Looting

Mobs will be dropping realistic items (like not a halberd from a rat) and player looting will be possible.
