In AOC, like many other MMOs, there will be 'tanking' classes that can soak-up damage. Tanks are often melee classes with high armor rating, health and 'aggro' controlling abilities, to keep the 'mobs' focused on the tank - the idea behind this is that the healer has only to concentrate on healing the tank, as the tank is taking most of the damage.
Whether the 'tanking' mechanic will work in AOC remains to be seen; it has been stated by the devs that there will not be the need for the 'holy trinity' of EverQuest (tank, healer, crowd control) in order for a group to be successful.
